About this event:
OncoEng, in particular its OncoEng+ network, together with colleagues at BioTrib are pleased to announce the following seminar, by Professor David Jayne
Title: Robotic colorectal cancer surgery; future directions
Abstract:
This seminar will explore the evolution of robotics for colorectal cancer surgery from the perspective of a practising cancer surgeon. It will discuss the clinical applications and penetration of robotics within the NHS. It will describe currently available robotic systems, their advantages over conventional laparoscopic surgery and their limitations. Remote preceptoring and telementoring are increasingly being used and are expected to become a part of routine practice in the future. Current trends to smaller, cheaper systems to realise the ambition of single and natural orifice surgery will be described. It will discuss the need for improved end-effectors for image-guided and precision surgery as well as the ambition and challenges of semi-automation. The incorporation of digital technologies, including augmented and computer vision, and the potential for machine learning and artificial intelligence to improve surgical performance will be discussed. Finally, it will look at possibilities for digital integration and technology convergence across the surgical care pathway.
Bio:
David is Bowel Cancer UK & RCS Engl. Professor of Surgery at the University of Leeds and Hon. Consultant Surgeon at LTHT. He is Chief Investigator for several NIHR portfolio clinical trials, including MRC/EME/NIHR ROLARR, HTA/NIHR FIAT, HTA/NIHR SaFaRI, and MRC/EME/NIHR IntAct. He is Clinical Director of the Leeds NIHR Surgical MedTech Co-operative, a national network of clinicians, academics, patient & public representatives, and commercial partners to develop novel solutions to unmet surgical need; Co-Director of the NIHR Advanced Surgical Technologies Incubator, which aims to build research capacity and capability in the NHS; Clinical Director for the Leeds RCS Eng. Surgical Trials Centre; and Co-Director for University of Leeds Centre for HealthTech Innovation.
OncoEng:
OncoEng is a UKRI EPSRC funded flagship programme grant concerned with research into the identification and prophylactic intervention of metastatic bone disease in the spine. It comprises a collaboration between the University of Leeds, Imperial College London and University College London. OncoEng+ network brings together a researchers and innovators from a wide set of disciplines with the UK and abroad to tackle the challenges that underpin cancer using engineering and the physical sciences.
